Race for the Cure Team 2011

May 7, 2011 in downtown Salt Lake City was the Susan G. Komen SLC Race for the Cure.  It was a gorgeous day and I walked much further than I had planned.
My team had 44 registrants and raised just over $2000 between registration fees and donations.  It was awesome!
We (Eric and I) have decided to make it a tradition to do the Race for the Cure with all the kids every year.  I think it will be important for them to see us participate in philanthropic activies as a family and to learn about the effect of these devastating diseases that need continual work to raise money.  They had a good time.
Bright eyed and bushy-tailed at 7am on a Saturday!  What a gorgeous day!

The kids had a great time.  I think they were in awe at how many people were there.

The husbands pushing the strollers

Eric and the Kids were good sports even though they all had to pee really bad!

Amy and Bonnie...carrying that belly 2.5 miles was no easy task!

Are you lost?

Exhausting day!
HCI's Pride for Pink 2011.  This is not everyone that registered but these were the only people we could find to get together for a pic.  Go team!

Lace up your (running, walking, sleeping) SHOES!

The Salt Lake City 2011 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is going to be May 7th, 2011.  I hesitated at first to register my team this year as I just didn't think that I was up to the task but some people at work have offered to help and I realized that this cause is worth the effort...even if I am too tired, pregnant, swollen, blah, blah, blah .  So here it is.  The 4th year in a row that I have organized the HCI's Pride for Pink Race for the Cure team.

So far we have raised about $2200 between registration fees and cash donations.  I am so excited for our team and for race day (even if I might need a stroller to get to the finish line).

The statistics for breast cancer are amazingly shocking.  Everyone knows someone that has either had or been effected by breast cancer.  I don't know if its my infinite love of the color pink or if I will at some time be personally effected by this disease in one way or another, but I feel a certain responsibility to be as involved as I can to do my part in helping to fight breast cancer.

Please join my team or make a donation here.

Race for the Cure 2010

The Susan G Komen Race for the Cure was on May 8th, 2010.  It was a gorgeous day and perfect for getting together to celebrate life.
It is such a humbling experience to be there with close to 20,000 other people and to see all the people with signs on their shirts honoring and remembering their loved ones who are fighting or who have succumbed to this aweful disease.

I read recently that there is 100% certainty that every one will be affected by breast cancer somehow; whether its by actually having it or by knowing someone who has it.  That is an amazing reality.

Organizations like the Komen Foundation dedicate their existence to making a difference for those that have been affected by breast cancer by funding life-saving treatments and research as well as providing financial support for patients that can't afford treatment.

This is the 3rd year that I have been the captain of HCI's Pride for Pink Team.  This year we raised a record amount of $2,950 and had 47 people register to race. The company I work for, Healthcare Insight, made the t-shirts we are wearing.  Aren't they great??    I also was able to talk Eric into joining me and pushing the little kids in our terrible beast of a double stroller.  It was pretty fun and the kids were really good.  I think they were amazed at how many people were there.

As you can see, Paige and Cameron were ecstatic to be there!

Race for the Cure a huge success...

Well, it finally came an went after all the preparation and excitement and it was a BLAST!! The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure was on May 10th, 2008 @ 8:30am in downtown Salt Lake City near the Gateway Mall. It was so fun. They said that there were something around 18,000 people registered for the event and I have no doubt that they were all there. It was amazing how many people you can cram into one place. As the race began it felt like we were being herded like cattle as there was no way we could pick up a quick walking pace. Shuffle for the cure was more appropriate. "Race for the bathroom" would have also been an fitting name. Have you ever tried to wait in line for a bathroom with 17,999 other women. Its impossible. Note to self: Next year, do not drink 32oz of diet Coke on the way to the race. Duh!!
This was taken the day before behind my office building. We invited all who wanted to come to have their pics taken with the amazing Pride for Pink team. I am the one in the front with the white legs!
I forced Eric and Braiden to walk too. No actually, Eric was happy to do it. Braiden was too until I made him wake up at 6am and by mile 2 he was complaining that his knees hurt. "Man up!" I had to say. As I was writhing in pain with a full bladder whilst walking 3 miles.

This is the official Pride for Pink Team photo. I think that we have permission to get this blown up large and hang it in the office building. We are pretty proud of our team. The banner gives the whole thing a nice touch, don't you think?

Rebecca, our inspiration for Pride for Pink, is beautiful, isn't she? She has an amazing strength to keep on truckin' through all the nasty stuff she is dealing with right now. The race was 4 days after one of her roughest chemo treatments but she walked the race without complaint and insisted on finishing. And finish, she did.

Kiley's sweet pink shoes. I plan to steal them next time I am near her closet. So cute and so appropriate.

Ginger, Karley, Kiley's mom Carol, Kiley, Shelby and her hubby.

Me. Love those self-portraits. A note about the hat: The night before I realized that I wanted to wear a hat but needed a pink one so I ran (drove fast) to Wal-Mart and all pink ribbon paraphernalia was GONE! So it was either this Hershey Kisses hat or a Budweiser hat with a can opener in the bill. Guess which one I chose...

Pride for Pink crossing the finish line...
Special survivors finish line...so symbolic of the journey to the end of the trial. Very cool for Rebecca.
HCI nurses: Brenda, Ginger, Myself, Kiley and Friend Tara.
Race for the CURE.

We will return next year. Rebecca plans to run. I'm there...
